okay i got a 97 ford mustang, and the oil pan gasket is leaking...i was told that i would have to lift the motor several inches in order to reach the oil pan gasket...is this true? and if it isnt, is there a way for somone with basic mechanical knowledge to replace the oil pan gasket without any MAJOR tools?

Yes it is true. You must install an engine support and lift eyes to raise engine properly in order to replace oil pan gasket.
