1987 Ford Mustang steering wheel turns loosely

My steering wheel turns a couple inches left and right freely before the wheels actual become engaged and turn. This happens while driving or in park. Any ideas?

check the rag joint on the steering shaft under the hood, its probably riped, same problem on my 88'
