1971 Ford Mustang Engine revs up when shifted into reverse

1971 Ford Mustang V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I am restoring a 1971 Mach 1, 351c. The car starts and idles fine now. When I shift into drive, the car will move forward. Then I step on the brake, and the idle seems to almost bottom out, but it keeps running. I shift into reverse and it acts as if I am stepping on the accelerator (even though my foot is still on the brake). The rear tire spins and the engine revs up. What would cause this?

Hi
Check for broken engine mounts especially the right side. Open hood observe engine in Rev does it raise up?

You know, when I was changing the oil pan I remember seeing that the passenger side motormount had seperated (rubber from metal). Since I am not driving the car yet, I have not fixed it yet. The car is a few towns away right now, so it will be a week or so for me to get out there and put new motor mounts in, but I will let you know when I have done that.

It took a while, but I finally got out there and changed the motor mounts this weekend. It looks like you nailed it in one! 2 new motor mounts = no peeling out in reverse (unless I want it to!). Thanks for the info!
