Engine Performance problem
1966 Ford Mustang V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a ford 302 in my 66 mustang. I bought the engine rebuilt and have never had any issues until now. its been in the car for about 2 yrs. It has an edelbrock intake manifold and 650 cfm performer carb on it. I got a new air filter and some carb cleaner the other day and replaced the cleaner and sprayed down the carb before replacing it. the first day it drove great on the highway the idle was a little rough but nothing to be concerned about that i noticed it wasnt a crazy rumble or anything just wasnt perfectly smooth on idle, ive had this problem before. but my air filter was geting pretty dirty from all the crappy weather we were getting so highway speeds started to suffer. It just didnt drive very smooth on the highway. replaced air filter cleaned it perfect, highway driving smooth as glass. but now two days later idle is bad real bad, the engine still drove great on the highway but when i would come to the lights or try to make a turn the engine didnt want to idle all the way down and it felt real rough and that it wanted to die (put it in neutral a couple of lights just to make sure it wouldnt die). got it home played with the idle screw and could never get the idle down( little over 1000rpm is as good as i could get it, normally in park it idled at about 700-800, in drive it was at about 600rpm). the idle screw is backed all the way off now, still idleing high. Ive also adjusted the fuel mixture screws on the front still no good. when it ran normal i had the screw backed off 1 and 1/2 turns and then tightened them at most 1/4 of a turn to lean out the mix of fuel, today i took the carb completely off and cleaned everything i could with out taking it apart. put it back on still idles high and if you rev the engine to try and bring the idle down it takes a few seconds for the revs to come back down from the rev and idles over 1000 rpm

Sounds like you need to adjust the choke plate initial opening and the fast idle cam-check if the linkages are sticking
