1996 Ford Mondeo tapping

for the last few weeks my car has been making a quiet tapping noise when revving but no other noticable affects today after a long journey the car overheated and broke down on a roundabout. after 10 mins cooling down it started again but had a really loud tapping noise which got worse as i drove home what could it be?

there could be numerous parts tapping .. have the vehicle checked by a technician
