1993 Ford Mondeo Clutch

Started my car after putting petrol in and it started and then there was a smell, all of a sudden there was a problem with the clutch. I couldn't do anything and the clutch lifts up and then drops to the floor. Can get it in gear but that's all? Is it the cable?

have the clutch itself checked .. if it was a burning smell the clutch is bad ..
