I put a new alternator in our 1973 Ford LTD Brougham. The ATL light did not turn off, and when disconnecting the battery, the car dies. We were told to get a new voltage regulator, however, the one we have is NOT the one carried by car repair places. We are at a loss and need some kind of direction on where to go or what to do?

If the voltage regulator is not the same brand it's ok as long as it hooks up the same. I'd recheck the alternator for being good and recharge the battery. If your battery is no good then the alternator will not charge either.
