My air conditioner recently stopped working. A local mechanic told me it was the climate control system. My concern is that the heat still works. Is it possible for the climate control to stop working where the A/C is concerned, but still allow the heat to work?

Anything is possible. When you turn the AC on, does the compressor engage?
