error code stated cam position sensor, replaced sensor but the problem still there, no other codes given still getting. sensor code. engine seems to run fine until you go above 2000 rpms and it stalls and the belt squeals, what are the other possible problems to cause this condition? this is my sister in-law's vehicle and trying to get it fixed.

Hello,

This sounds like a weak fuel pump but to be sure lets run this test when the engine stalls. What is the code number?

This guide can help as well

Please run down these guides and report back.

Let's replace the camshaft sensor (CMP synchronisation) which if is shorts out can cause the engine to stall. This guide will walk you through the steps with the location of the sensor featured in the diagrams below.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/camshaft-angle-sensor-replacement

Was the alternator ever replaced? Seems there were many cases of faulty alternators causing the problem.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-alternator

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

i believe the alternator was replaced in the past year, the engine is the 3.9L one thing i forgot to mention- unsure if it makes a difference- when i replaced the cam sensor made no difference so i took it off again cleaned the contacts of the connectors and cleaned with electrical contact cleaner where the sensor itself goes and reassembled it. And for about 1 minute thought that fixed it- ran above 2000 rpm to about 4000 rpm then it started stalling there then started stalling again just above 2000 rpm, she also just had the power steering pump replaced belt tensioner and belt

Since alternator was replaced before, I would suggest checking it first. Many technicians all over had encuntered a fault with the alternator trigggering P0340.

My Ford Freestar SEL 2004 also is having the trouble code P0340. The car was started with the air conditioner on full blast. I don't know if that makes a difference. Twice (June 1st and July 15th). Both times the incidents were LIFE THREATENING. We had just pulled out of the church parking lot and were headed home, 20 miles away. We progressed 1/2 a block when the car engine died out and we had no power - with a line of impatient cars behind us. We managed to drive to my brother's house (normally a 5 minute drive). It took us 45 minutes - (turn ignition on - start up, then die). At this point I am so discouraged. We just bought this car in March 2010. We replaced the transmission 2 years ago ($3,000). Now the computer tester says P0340. My brother tested it then reset the computer. Now the car dealership cannot get a reading on it. The same thing happened on the first incident. Advance Auto tested it then cleared the computer. All mechanics cannot get a picture of this problem. So far Venters Ford in Ayden, NC has completed its 100,000 mile checkup. They have replaced a SOLONOID; all spark plugs; oil change. Two days after we paid Venters $559 for the service, the car began the same ENGINE trouble. We drove it back to VENTERS and they will not release our car back to us until they figure this out. However, they cannot get the CODE to come up, because in both instances the mechanics that tested it with their computer testers erased the codes. I did not know that I needed the printout in order to have it repaired. HELP!!!!!!!

This is in addition to the comments of tom4ever (Jul 22, 2012). The alternator was replaced in 2010. We had to special order it to get the correct size, as the 4.2L Freestar uses a larger algernator than those sold at Advance Auto. It has worked but could it also be something to consider? I have no idea why VEnters Ford replaced a solonoid.

Check the alternator voltage when the engine RPM is brought over 2000 RPM. You mentioned a squealing sound......where is that coming from? It could be a worn bearing in the alternator.

im having the exact same issue, I thought it was a wet PCM, replaced the coil and the camshaft sensor, also I noticed that it behaves badly on wet weather, the belt starts making noise,, my alternator was replaced 3 months ago, my ac too. I don't know what else to do.

btw. took it to a ford dealership, they told me it was the transmission.. because of the codes.. P0340???

any ideas?

P0340 is related to the CMP-Camshaft position sensor not the trans.
Check head space on the sensor and pickup, check the wiring and connections.

For the belt squealing, check the belt tension. Also, remove the belt and check the bearings on the accessories by spinning them by hand with the belt off. They should spin freely and make no noise.

What do you mean by "it behaves badly in wet weather" ?

Ok, A belt squealing indicates a problem with the belt system, either the belt itself, the tensioner, bearings, or the pulley. What about the power steering pump?

Your description of what happens when it rains tells me there is a problem with on or more of the electrical connections. Make sure everything is properly connected and the plug wires are fully seated on the plugs. Make sure the coil is properly connected. Make sure the distributor cap is securely attached and not cracked.

I have a 2004 Freestar, mine will do the same thing. My mechanic says that what is happening is the key is wore out. The security chip is in the ignition switch and the key is not quite connecting with the chip so the security system is trying to somewhat shut down. He had me make a new key and it hasnt done it since. The new key has a more snug fit so it fits the connectors of the security chip like it should. Fords can be so tempermental. Try this.

check fuel pump pressure, and if the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned for codes. NOTE: Most parts stores will scann it for free.

Just paid $700 having vacuum line replaced among other things but still having the same problem. When it stalls out when driving everything shuts down and its hard to break or steer and all the engine lights go on . But then it starts back up like nothing happened . The mechanic checked all the codes and said the vacume line was the problem but the issue is not resolved.

Sounds like a loose wire on the ignition , it may be vibrating loose and shutting the engine down, get the mechanic who did the work to check this out.

Engine Performance problem
2004 Ford Freestar 6 cyl Automatic 89,000 miles

About two weeks ago the engine light went on but, the car was running fine. We continued to use it and put medium grade fuel in it. The light shut off and ran fine. Today when you turn the key, it starts but intantly shuts down. Depressing the gas peddle to rev the engine does nothing. Any ideas? It was thinking the o2 sensor or the pvc valve? The other thought I had was the fuel injectors? Should we try an additive? Help us, Please.

Six cylinder automatic 102,000 miles.

I have the vehicle listed above 4.2L. It stalls when the engine tries to idle and will not go faster than thirty mph, choking the whole time. I have replaced the IAC valve, fuel filter and catalytic converter, but none of that fixed the problem. I am about to pull out! Can you help?

This sounds like you have a plugged exhaust when you did the catalytic converter did they check the muffler?

Here is a guide that shows how to confirm the plugged exhaust by loosening the exhaust head pipes:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-a-catalytic-converter

Please run down this guide and report back.

Cheers

P1235 - Fuel Pump Control Out Of Range

P2008 - Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) Circuit Open (Bank 1). The IMRC'S (intake manifold runner control) are what make an intake both a long runner and short runner intake. For upper rpm power or wide open throttle the butterflies open, for around town they stay closed. They have a sensor(s) and either vacuum motors or electric motors. The IMRC'S are located between the upper intake plenum and lower intake manifold. In your case the butterflies may be stuck open causing a lean condition and a miss or the engine to die. If I recall, this will also cause the fuel pump control to go a little crazy. I think you have a vacuum leak to the IRMC (bank one) or a bad electrical connection (corrosion) causing your problem.
