Transmission problem
2004 Ford Freestar 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 60k miles
Does the transmission need to be drained prior to removing the drive axles? Or, can the outer boots be replaced without axle removal?

Hi mlw64,
Thank you for the donations.
When the axle shafts are removed, some amount of gear oil will flow out as the level is higher then the shafts joints.
You can either drain or in my case, I use an oil pan under the joints to collect any oil that may drain out when the shafts are removed.
Remember to top up after reinstallation.

Is this the type trans that is pressurized? My sister's Explorer is pressurized. My nephrew drained the trans by mistake while beginning an oil change. It wouldn't move after replacing the fluid. The dealership technician said it needed to be re-pressurized.

No, the axle gears and transmission assy are 2 different component. Both items are separated by another shaft.
