I took my car in to the transmission shop because the transmission was slipping and making a lot of noise when you start out and at slow speeds. The shop told be the transmission needs to be rebuilt and several parts will need to be replaced. They gave me an estimate of $2300 but said it may be higher because of the vehicle. It is a Ford Focus, not a Mercedes. Is this price estimate valid?

It will take a minimum of 14 labor hours at reputable shop to remove, overhaul and reinstall your tranny. 14 hours at the average cost of $75 an hour adds up to around $1,000 just in labor. If there are several parts needing replaced on the tranny then that will add up quickly to anouther $1,000 which comes to the subtotal of approx. $2,000. A tranny rebuild is always going to be an expensive repair, it doesn't matter if its a chevy truck, ford focus or a lambo. It's an expensive fix and 2k is actually pretty cheap. You could purchase a new tranny for almost 2k alone then pay anouther 1k in labor to replace your old one.
