Why does my car start to run hot and when I turn the heater on the temp hand goes back to normal

that is actually a trick to use if in traffic and you are overheating, the reason why this happens is because, the hot coolant runs all the way into the heater core, and when you turn the heat on, then the air from the blower motor passes across the heater core and cools down the coolant then the temp goes down, kinda like a mini radiator and fan setup.
