can you use a silicone sealent in place of a gasket on the cylinder head?

no, never try to use any type of sealant to replace a head gasket, it will not work. they do make special sealants such as steel seal to repair a failed head gasket, but they make a bigger mess and usually fail very quickly. just remove head and replace with some good fel pro head gaskets is your best bet.
