2000 Ford Focus suspsension is making a rattling sound

I have a clunking to clanking sound that might be the ball joints or the cv going out, maybe its both, ho do i troubleshoot the sound

Jack up the front side and make sure the tires are not touching the ground and start it up and put it in gear -now start listening where its coming from while turning the steering
