1999 Ford Fiesta over heating whilst driving

Engine Cooling problem
1999 Ford Fiesta 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual Zetecs miles

I have a ford zetec-s xreg. the temperature gauge goes right up to the red when im driving, so i put the heaters on and it goes down, the gauge doesnt seem to move from half way when im in traffic! its only when im driving! there is coolant in the bottle, but i havent checked the radiator itself. hope you can help me with trying to find the problem? thanks jay
