Removal
Remove wheel assembly and hub nut retainer. Remove splash shield. Remove bolt attaching brake hose to strut. Remove and discard bolt and nut retaining lower ball joint to steering knuckle.
Separate tie rod end from steering knuckle. Remove stabilizer bar link from steering knuckle. Pry down on control arm assembly to separate ball joint from steering knuckle. Pull out on steering knuckle, and remove outer CV joint from hub assembly.
To remove left side axle shaft, remove crossmember. To remove right side axle shaft, remove side shield and splash shield. To remove left axle, pry outward between inner CV joint and transaxle. After axle disengages from differential side gears, remove axle assembly.
To remove right axle on Coupe models equipped with M/T, remove support bearing mounting bolts. Lower driveshaft and separate half shaft from differential gears. Separate drive shaft from center support bearing and half shaft.
Installation
Replace inner CV joint circlip. To install axle shaft, reverse removal procedure. Ensure circlip is fully seated in transaxle. Install NEW axle retaining nut and tighten to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure one lock tab is positioned in axle shaft slot. Replace nut if cracks occur in staked portion of nut after nut is staked.
