will the gas converter cause poor performance problems
and poor firing problems at idle

Hi there.

This may be your problem, you should have the mixture tested, if the converter is an older impco it will be adjustable, but the later units are not, also check that the leads are not cross firing, if they have a lot of Grey residue where they are bunched, replace them.
