2002 Ford F350 vehicle randomly dies

F350 diesel-
Check engine light and glow plug light come on, engine dies and will not restart while check engine light is on. Engine will restart when glow plug and check engine light times out. Can turn key on and off but engine will not restart while check engine light on. Does not recognize scanner when this happens keeps instructing to "turn key on" does not store fault codes or does not throw them.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it may be the GPCM (Glow Plug Control Module) that is going bad. That is a pricey item and if I remember correctly it needs to be programmed. At the same time it sounds like the PCM may be having an issue due to the lack of communication, but that could possibly be due to the GPCM.I would need to know if this is a federal or california truck to look up the wiring to try and find an answer for you. There is a TSB (tech service bulletin) about an issue with the Glow plug Control Module connector being bad causing a no-start condition.
