Hello, I have a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 3.0L w/ automatic transmisison. There are a few things wrong with the vehicle but I'm almost sure they all tie into the same thing. I get around 12 miles to the gallon and I'm pretty sure that's not right. The engine often seems underpowered and requires around 2500-3000 rpm's to keep up with traffic. However, this changes day by day. There is also pinging when the engine is under load such as climbing a hill or accelerating in second gear. I'v been struggling with this for months and have replaced many things including all oxygen sensors. The engine seems to run better after I clean some carbon out of it by getting on the throttle. However, the mpg never really gets better. It has been as low as 8 mpg before. Any help or suggestions? They would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Run some injector cleaner thru a couple of tanks of gas. I would also take a good look at the knock sensor. Check the connection and the sensor it self. They also must be installed with the correct torque to function properly.

Any codes?

Suggested Repair

Run fuel injector cleaner through a couple of tanks of gas. Inspect the knock sensor and its connection, and confirm it is installed to the correct torque. Also scan for diagnostic trouble codes.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 3.0L automatic reports about 12 mpg, sometimes as low as 8, along with an underpowered engine that often needs 2500-3000 rpm to keep up with traffic and pinging under load. Oxygen sensors were already replaced, and hard acceleration temporarily improves running but not fuel economy. The expert suggests using injector cleaner for a couple of tanks, inspecting the knock sensor, its connection, and installation torque, and checking for codes.
