1969 Ford F-250 new starter not engaging flywheel

Engine Mechanical problem
1969 Ford F-250 V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 110k miles

put new starter in 60 days ago and it started great, now starter just keep spinning an won't engage the fly wheel
checked bolts an one was loose, tightened it and still have same problem. there was no shims in old starter and the new did no come with any so just bolted it in.
Any ideas what might be the problem,replaced the selaniod and cable also

Hi there,

You will have to pull the starter and check that the Bendix is moving freely as this is what engages the ring gear.

wow, that's a real no brainer, with all the high tech crap we have on cars and trucks,you think somebody would would have figured out how to check a starter problem without having to pull the damn starter every time it burps, we can design a car to think for us, but can't make one that doesn't doesn't need to be completely disassembled to empty the ash tray, no wonder this country is on a downward spiral right into the ground,

With out actually viewing the action of the Bendix there is no way of knowing if it is working or not, the starter can still spin up and if the Bendix is not engaging nothing will happen, there is no magic machine to check this one out on car
