I have a 1987 F-150 (4.9) with an inline-6Cylinder. Has a manual 4-speed transmission with rear wheel drive.
I had the engine replaced last year. It is now time to smog the vehicle and I had it pretested. They say it is putting out 3X the amount of fuel it should. I had them dyno it and they were unable to find a specific problem. They suggested I try and replace the computer. When I called parts places they told me they would need the part number off the computer. I pulled it out and it says it is for a V-8 engine! Am thinking this is the problem. HOWEVER, my problem is everyone tells me there are about 8 different possible computers for this engine. How do I find out which one I need?
Ford wasn't even able to help me!

All I can suggest is go to a junk yard and pull one out of a six. Try it!

You need the engine calibration number, Ford should be able to cross-reference it to a particular computer. This is a problem that people who think they can just swap out an engine into their vehicle run into, your engine has certain controls that maybe another doesn't necessarily have, it must be mated to the correct control system. The calibration number is usually on a sticker mounted on the engine somewhere, maybe the valve cover or elsewhere. The dealer should be able to tell you. It could also be elsewhere too.
