coolant flush ford F150

I have a 1997 4.6L V8 F150 ford supercab truck with 74,000 miles. I plan to change the coolant and flush out the radiator. My plan is to remove the thermostat and run water through the engine to flush out the coolant in addition to flushing out the radiator. My problem is that I am not sure of the best way for the water to drain from the engine. Detaching the lower radiator hose (on the radiator end) was my first thought but after looking at it, I am not sure if the water will drain out. The lower radiator hose angles down into the bottom of the engine which means the water would have to flow upward to drain out of the engine. Will water drain out of the engine when run through the thermostat housing by a garden hose even if it has to flow upward? If there is a better way, please let me know!
