Brake problem

I am looking at a 2001 Ford Tauras sedan, it is being offered at a state vehicle auction. It looks great, only has 28,040 miles on it, but the description says there are brake problems. Given the mileage and year, in your opinion what could be the problem and what do you think it would cost to get this "problem" fixed. I looked up the value on Kelly Blue book and assuming the brakes can be fixed, it is worth 5550.00, and I will probably beable to pick this one up for about 1500.00. What is your opinion?

It is not a matter of whether that brakes can be fixed, they can always be fixed, it is a matter of whether or not you are willing to pay for the repairs to be done. The way I would look at it is this: the value of the car is 5550.00, and I can buy it for 1500.00. If the brake problem is simple, I could possibly get this car on the road safely for 1600.00 which would be worth it. On the other hand, if the problem is complex, I could pay several thousand for just the brakes. It all depends on the what the problem is. Given this analogy, I would say that if the repairs needed to the brakes cost more than 4050.00 I would not waste my time. However, to my knowledge, I have never heard of a Brake job costing more than 2000.00.
