99 Ford Ranger XLT 4WD problem

I have a 99 Ranger XLT, 150K miles, v6 engine. I bought it second hand to take up some "unimproved" mountain paths. It has a tendency to not stay in 4wd.

One minute, I'm in 4w low, climbing in and out of erosion gullies with no effort. The next, my rear tires are spinning, and the front just sit there. According to the dash indicator light, I'm still in 4w low. I shift to neutral, switch into 2wd, then back into 4w low, and voila! Up she comes! Until the next time she doesn't.

No pattern I can recognize, no overt sign that the front wheels have stopped pulling until I stop moving.

Have the codes pulled and that should help point the right direction.

I was told to pull the codes. There were two(2) codes: P0700 - trans control system malfunction & P1791 - don't have info on this code. Does anyone know what parts are affected by these codes. 1996 Acura Integra LS, 1.8 liter, auto trans, 181K Miles.

I double checked the wiring connectors on the auto transmission and two connectors were not in the correct location. I swapped the connectors and my problems went away. I hope this helps someone else with the same problems.
