i checked my oil @3000 miles 1/2 quart low .is this normal for a new truck?

Did you check it right when you got it for a good starting point? If not it may have been down a little then.
I wouldn’t worry about it yet. I would make sure you know where it is on the dip stick and make sure there are no oil drops on the floor or any place on the engine.
Check the oil pan drain plug for security and any dampness and the oil filter. Then I would drive it and check it again at 3000 and see what you have.
