Will not engage-only used a few times aboput a year ago- dealer says new motor is needed without any examine.--what other repairs may work that don't cost $500.

19000 and out of warranty? it may be 500 at the dealer, but its way cheaper to buy the actutor motor and install it yourself, it's bolted to the transfer case and it's real simple to do. Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO. 1. With the ignition in the ON position, switch the mode select switch (MSS) to 4H. 2. Turn the ignition to the OFF position. 3. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING . 4. Disconnect the harness connector. 5. Remove the bracket bolt and the 3 mounting bolts, then remove the transfer case shift motor.  Remove the shifter shaft seal. 6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.  Apply a coat of multi-purpose grease to the transfer case shift motor.
