If you are having an issue with the ring and pinion, then normally there is a noise. Typically, it is a howling or humming noise that normally is worse when you accelerate or let off the accelerator.
If you are replacing the crush sleeve, then you are going to have to retorque and set your bearing preload. However, if you are just tearing it down to inspect the pinion, then you do not need to remove the axle nut. If you want to remove it then you have to check your bearing preload so that you can reinstall it back to the correct preload. However, if you actually remove the pinion from the axle then you have to replace it and torque to achieve the preload of 16–29-inch pounds. This means the pinion does not spin until you reach that amount of torque.
