2001 Ford F150 Using Oil

My Triton engine has been using oil. 2 Quarts between changes. Most of the time it does not smoke but once in a while when you push on the gas hard it does not pick up speed and lets out a big cloud of smoke. Then it will gather speed and no smoke. Can it be anything besides bad rings that will cause this.

Sounds more like an uipper end problem with the valvetrain such as valves/guides/seals-get a valve job-A ring problem will be always there accelerating or decelerating-
