Where is the reset button for the service engine soon light on a 2000 Ford F150?

Answer
A service engine light means you have a problem that needs repairing. If you have already checked out the problems and corrected them, disconnect the negative cable from your battery for 1 minute. If the light comes back on after reconnecting the battery, you still have an unresolved engine problem.

This guide will help.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

This video will show how to clear the codes.

https://youtu.be/ahK_eucFi-k

additional info : there is no "reset button". The trucks computer monitors various systems and if it senses a problem it turns on the light. The computer also stores codes that can be read and interpreted giving you a hint as to what the problem is. When the problem is fixed the computer should show no issues and the light will not light up. If you have a truck with a digital tripmeter/odometer on the dash you can access all the engine codes by pushing the reset button while you start the engine. After the engine starts continue pushing the reset button to display things such as a digital tachometer, water temp etc etc. This is there because the computer is generic to all trucks but not all trucks have the fancy option package of showing this info on a separate screen. What you are seeing is what the dealer would see with his diagnostic computer. It is all alpha numeric and makes no sense but you can find explanations to all this on several websites dealing specifically with ford trucks. Its out there on the web, you just have to dig. Good luck.

Copied and pasted from website. I think it was wikipedia. Anways I have the same problem with my truck and have not tried this yet. From this response I believe there isn't a reset button for a oil change but it is for diagnostic purposes.

Engine Mechanical problem
2001 Ford F150 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My 2001 F150 has 125, miles and has had few problems. I live in Alaska where it gets cold. Recently my oil light came on and did this on & off along with the Service Engine light. I had the oil changed about 1000 miles ago. I checked the oil and it was full. I took the truck in to the shop where the oil was changed and they said they got a code for a thermometer so they installed a new one. They could not get the oil light to appear. I picked up the truck and 2 days later both lights reappeared. At first I thought it was only when the temp outside was below 10 degrees but now it seems to do it intermittently. The truck seems to run fine.

Ok if you would call around to your local parts stores and see if one will do a free scan. Get it scanned and write the codes down. Then have the codes cleared and get back to me with what codes are there.

I had a "service engine soon" light on my truck, took it down to Autozone and got the code (don't recall). It was for engine tempature and said I needed to 1) check coolant 2) check thermostat 3) ECT valve. - Coolant was good, changed the thermostat, drove about 50 miles and now the light is out. - Question can I go and get my truck inspected and pass the emissions test. Does the light going out mean it is good to go or is the fault still in the computer and will register and fail my emission test at inspection.

It was code 125, I changed the thermostat and the light went out after 50 miles or so. My question was now that the light is out will the truck pass the emissions test on inspection. OR is the fault still in the computer and will register and fail my emission test at inspection.

My "service engine soon" came on tonight. Plugs are replaced @100,000.
The funny thing that last night someone stole gas out of the truck. Wife drove enough to get more gas.
What should I been looking for?

Hello,

First, take it by your local parts store and have them pull codes. Post them here in forum.

Was the Gas Cap damaged? If so replace it, it will cause an emission code to set.

The check engine light came on whenever I drove the truck. I saw online that if I disconnected the battery the light would go off. That worked, but now the battery is reconnected and the truck won't start, it turns over but won't start.
What to do?

Hi there, first re check that the battery terminal is tight and clean, and you will have to get a scan to check the ECU for fault codes, also check main ECU fuses.

You will need a diagnostic scan tool to read the engine codes, fix the issue then delete the engine codes. You can purchase a scan tool or you can have a shop or part store do it for you.

Last year had to smog my truck. The engine light was on. I was told that if I diconnected the battery, that engine light would go off. It did! I took the truck in to be smog and it passed. 2 days later the engine light came back on. Is it because of the high mileage that caused it to come on again. 2 year peivious to this sitution. I drove my truck 2 year with the engine light on. So what gives on this engine light on?

Hi there,

The light is an indication that a fault code has been stored in the ECU, you will need to get a scan done to read the code as this will be an indication as to where the problem is.

Yep! Pull the egr off, clean the port under it all the way to the throttle plate, I use a length of steel coathanger. Put it all back together, reset the codes, if light comes on again, replace the EGR position sensor, thats the one the two small hoses from the exhaust plug into!
