2001 F150 4.6L 118,000 mi, oil problems

I have my a problem with knocking or clattering noise and the oil pressure guage on the way home the other day dropped to nothing and return to what has always been normal. There is plenty of oil and I removed the valve cover to see how the oil was pumping. My question is how much oil should be pumping out? Should it be shooting out everywhere?

There is nothing wrong with having good pressure at the top, However, what you should do is put a gauge on it and get true readings, even if it means converting from an idiot light to a gauge! If the pressure relief valve is stuck it can blow the filter open!

Thanks Merlin, what do you mean by "If the pressure relief valve is stuck it can blow the filter open!" Will that keep the pump from pumping sufficent oil? Aslo can I get a guage at the parts store to get true readings?

Also, maybe I wasn't clear on the oil pumping, it is not shooting everywhere, it is barely squirting out.

Ok, I checked the oil pressure and it was at 50-60 psi, closer to the 60. I did find the rattle though as the lifters and rocker assembly all looked good. My guide side of the chain tensioner is flopping around in the case. Can I get this assembly at a parts store, if it is broke? Also should I go ahead and replace the pressure switch, as I am still not sure why it was bouncing from noithing to normal?
