My 98 Ford has begun to not want to start. It will turn over, but it acts as though it may not be getting fuel or maybe vaccum to keep the egine running. If it will start, once it goes below 1000 rpm it stutters and wants to quit running.

We changed the fuel filter last night and it definately is getting fuel. The vaccum is our next step, just not real for sure what to check for or how to go about it. We really do not want to go to a mechanic if we can fix it ourselves, because of the cost.

There are vacuum lines under the dash, the hood. With the engine running, sometimes you will hear a hissing sound if there is a leak. Check for dry rotted, damaged, disconnected hoses. Some mechanics will spray starting fluid on hoses and the intake because it will cause the RPM's to raise if there is a leak. However, I hate doing it because if you hit an engine component that is hot enough, it will catch fire. I guess if you are really careful, you can do it.
