1997 Ford F-150 starter and battery

My truck starter tries to engage while engine is running sometimes?
Also should my engine go off if I disconnect neg, bat. Cable while truck is running?

Test the starter relay and ignition switch. If you disconnect the battery the engine will continue to run if the alternator producing its correct output.

So what is the problem? My engine dies as soon as I remove neg. Cable. Test light shows alternator is charging battery

I already replaced ignition switch? Didn"t help

what is a starter relay? Same as starter mounted solenoid?

Test the starter relay could be sticking internally causing the battery and starter contact to short out and transfering unwanted power to the starter.

4.6L the relay is located at no.2 in right rear of engine compartment see below

5.4L is on no.4 see below also in right rear of engine compartment.
