1996 Ford F150 Grinding - Roaring front end

The vehicle grinds/roars at low speed, 1st gear. It seems to come from the front drivetrain. I'm thinking it's the 4x4 making the noise. It goes away in 2nd - over 25mph. Any ideas

While it's making noise, will the noise stop if you put the trans in neutral? Also, are there any changes in sound if you make a turn?
