1994 Ford F150 tachometer

I hooked up a tach in my ford to the negitive side of the coil, and it still wont read rpms. the engine is a 4.9 fuel injected 300cid and the ignition system in it is standard TFI-IV system. where do I tie in my wire to get it to read rpms?

would be on the negative side, are you sure you have it hooked up properly?
