Electrical problem
1992 Ford F150 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 180K miles

Is it possible to test a fuel float sensor for this vehicle. The sensor is mounted to the fuel pump which is inside the gas tank. This truck has two fuel tanks. The fuel gauge works when switched to the rear tank but not when on the front tank. I have not removed the fuel pump/sensor from the front tank yet. I did find a sensor at a salvage yard but do not know if it works. It screws on to the fuel pump and has a single wire that goes to the wiring harness mounted to the tank. Ford wants $155.00 for a new one. If the one I found works I would like to use it. I don't know how or if it can be tested, not being hooked up to the fuel pump. Thank you.

On some makes and models, I have done an ohms test on the sending unit. Digital multimeter on the ohms setting, leads hooked to proper terminals, work the float up and down, the readings should change. My memory is old, I can't remember doing that on your particular vehicle, I have done it though.

I just wanted to add, you can check the sending unit already installed, the same way. If it reacts ok, I think the problem is elsewhere.

Thank you for the timely and accurate response. I hooked an ohm meter up to the sensor, moved the float up and down, and the ohms changed as you described. I will go ahead with the repair and save myself $155.00 from dealer cost. Thank you very much. I am trying to add a posting to express my appreciation. Being new to this I haven't gotten everything figured out yet. This was the best.
