Steering problem
1988 Ford F150 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 70,000 miles
I have alot of play in the steering wheel. It is really bad and it scares me when I am out on the road. What is the problem and what needs to be fixed?

Have someone get in the truck and saw the wheel back and forth while you watch it from underneath. This is the best way to see where the slop is. The truck shouldnt need to be running

There is an adjustment screw on top of the steering gear box that controls the lash of the gears inside.
Loosen the set bolt and turn the screw a quarter turn at a time and road test.
Don't get it too tight!
I personally had to replace the entire box and it didn't change things very much. Good luck.
