First, believe it or not, an oil change can help, but I doubt that much. It sounds like it is running rich (too much fuel). Has the check engine light come on? Have the oxygen sensors been checked?

NO. I DON'T THINK I HAVE AN ENGINE CHECK LIGHT. IF I DO IT HAS NEVER COME ON. I THINK THE OXYGEN SENSOR WAS REPLACED. A LONG TIME AGO. MY FUEL FILTER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED TOO.

My concerns lead me to believe there is a sensor or O2 sensor problem. Also, keep in mind, with that many miles, there is a chance that a loss of compression can lead to the fuel not fully getting burned. I am sure there is a check engine light in the vehicle. What I want you to try is take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and ask them to scan the computer for codes. Chances are the light is burned out and there are trouble codes in the computer that will help identify the problem.

I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THS TRUCK. I BOUGHT IT IN 1987 WITH ONLY 34000 MILES ON IT. THERE NEVER WAS AN ENGINE CHECK LIGHT THEN? AT A 180 TO 195,000 MILES THE OIL PRESSURE USE TO DROP LOW ONCE THE ENGINE WAS WARM. I HAD JASPER ENGINES REBUILD MY MOTOR. ROUGHLY THERE IS ABOUGHT 70,000 0N THE REBUILT MOTOR. WITH THE VACUUM TEST THEIR IS 20 Hg OF VACUUM. FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS IT USED TO PASS. HIGH IDLE PASSES FIRST TIME HC PPM 66, CO%O.43, CO2%11.72, 02% 4.33. SECOND TIME HC PPM 77, CO%0.22 CO2% 12.38, O2% 3.58.

Based on the info you provided, it is running rich. Have you had any work done to the carb?

If it does have a carb, make sure the choke is opening fully when the engine warms up. Also, there is a fuel and air mixture screw on the front bottom of the carb. I always turn them in the entire way and then 1 and 1/2 turns out. That is a good starting place. After that, you basically listen to where the engine runs the smoothest and the idle peaks.
