1982 Ford F-150 Rough Idle When Warm

Hi,

I just purchased a 1982 Ford f150 inline 6 (300), with AT. When the truck gets up to operating tempurature it starts to have a rough idle, and at times may stall out. Prior to reaching operating tempurature the truck idles great and never stalls.

Any ideas as to where I should start?

Thank you,

Eric

Six cylinders have a way of shaking the carb loose. Check it out. Do a tune up also. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PCV valve, fuel filter, and a tank of gas with intake/carb/injector cleaner. I like chevron with techron or seafoam.

Good luck and let us know. :)

Forgot to mention that the carb can come loose at the mounting bolts and the bolts/screws that actually hold the carb together. Check and tighten both as needed.

Suggested Repair

Check and tighten the carburetor mounting bolts and the screws that hold the carburetor together, since inline-six vibration can loosen them. Perform a tune-up including plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PCV valve, and fuel filter, and run a tank of fuel with carburetor cleaner such as Chevron with Techron or Seafoam. After that, check and adjust the choke.

Conversation Summary

A 1982 Ford F-150 with a carbureted 300 inline-six and automatic transmission idles well when cold but runs rough and may stall once it reaches operating temperature. Maintenance history is unknown. Experts recommend checking for a carburetor loosened by engine vibration, completing a basic tune-up with plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PCV valve, fuel filter, and fuel-system cleaner, then checking choke adjustment.
