Torsion bars can be adjusted. How much can the torsion bars be adjusted to give the vehicle a better ride in the front end. Also will adjusting the bars effect the front end alignment ?

They are factory set for a reason. I've read they can be torqued to raise the vehicle an inch or two. I've also seen them brake afterwards if you decide to riase your vehicle that way be cognisennt to the fact they are more susptible to breakage and it can shock the crap out of you when they do break.
You should be able to buy bars with more tension

Suggested Repair

Leave the factory torsion-bar setting in place. Raising the front about one to two inches by torquing the stock bars can lead to breakage. If more tension is needed, use replacement torsion bars with higher tension instead of over-adjusting the originals.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport with 85,000 miles asked how far the torsion bars can be adjusted for a better front ride and whether adjustment affects alignment. The expert said the bars are factory set, that raising the vehicle about one to two inches this way can cause breakage, and that bars with more tension can be purchased instead. Alignment was not addressed.
