Smelling gas fumes

Have a 1999 ford explorer with 67,000 miles, 4.0, 2wheel drive. Had a new fuel pump put in a couple of months ago. Since then my check engines light comes on. So I go to auto zone and have them check it and it comes back with bad gas cap. Have replaced 3 times, still gas fumes. Fumes are worse when I fill my tank fuel and can smell them bad until the tank is just at half and under. Any answers to why since I had it in the shop? Also should I be driving with kids in car, today it smelled like it could blow up anytime. Can the replacement of the fuel pump have anything to do with the fumes when they fixed it?

I have seen several fuel filler necks leak on these. Look closely around the seat of the neck where the cap rests on. Is there any cracks? Also severe corrosion will allow it to release fumes. Check the codes in the computer. If a evaporative code comes up, have the system smoked. Those necks aren't cheap

Are you saying that I shouldn't be driving the explorer? Also, about how much am I looking at to replace the neck?

Well, fumes are explosive....will you have a problem? I dunno. It's up to you to drive or not.

At our shop labor runs about 35-70 to install, the neck is around $300 I think. But it all depens on the area your in. Call around and ask or go to a shop you trust better yet.

My pleasure.

You should get the codes read and have the system
checked with a smoke machine if an evap code shows before you do replace anything.
