I have to replace a single tire (left front) but am being told by the folks at the tire shop that I have to replace all four because it's an "all wheel drive". However, I've been told from others that 4X4 Auto is not all wheel drive but that I should replace both front tires. I have the spare on which is the same size p235/70R16 but is not the same brand. I measured the tire as best possible and it appears to be the same diameter as the front right tire. Do I have to replace both front tires or all four or can I just replace the one that needs it and is it alright to use a different brand?

Hello –

Depending on the amount of wear, I don’t believe it is really important to replace all 4 if all have good tread.

The concern is the different tread pattern may give different stability in say, rain….

You should be able to look at the tire size and they all should be the same…that is important. Different manufactures again goes back to the different tread pattern, different handling…..

I usually put unlike tires on the back…..that way your steering always has the good tires….

I have attached an excellent web site for you to review and you can call these folks and they can provide some excellent info.
