I have to replace a single tire (left front) but am being told by the folks at the tire shop that I have to replace all four because it's an "all wheel drive". However, I've been told from others that 4X4 Auto is not all wheel drive but that I should replace both front tires. I have the spare on which is the same size p235/70R16 but is not the same brand. I measured the tire as best possible and it appears to be the same diameter as the front right tire. Do I have to replace both front tires or all four or can I just replace the one that needs it and is it alright to use a different brand?

Hello -

Depending on the amount of wear, I don't believe it is really important to replace all 4 if all have good tread.

The concern is the different tread pattern may give different stability in say, rain. . ..

You should be able to look at the tire size and they all should be the same. . .that is important. Different manufactures again goes back to the different tread pattern, different handling. . ...

I usually put unlike tires on the back. . ...that way your steering always has the good tires. . ..

I have attached an excellent web site for you to review and you can call these folks and they can provide some excellent info.
