2005 Ford Explorer service light is on

What does it mean when the "service engine soon" light comes on? The other day, my gas gauge stopped working and this light came one. The next day, the gauge worked, and the light turned off about 4 days later.

It means when the check engine light is On-the computer has stored a code/s in its memory and needs to be scanned to identify the problem area-You can go to Autozone its a free service-then comeback with it to start the diagnosis.
