There is a problem with your brake shift interlock it sounds like, are there any aftermarket lighting installed?

HAs it been stiff to shift to other gears latley?

My guess is a BPP or Brake Pedal Position switch or circuit failure. Shift lock actuator may also be a problem.

Does your brake light illuminate when you press the brake pedal? If no, check fuse BJB 50 (15 amp fuse).

Suggested Repair

Check whether the brake lights come on when the pedal is pressed. If they do not, inspect fuse BJB 50 (15 amp). The likely causes are the brake shift interlock, brake pedal position switch or its circuit, or the shift lock actuator.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 2003 Ford Explorer cannot shift out of park. The expert suspects a brake shift interlock issue, a brake pedal position switch or circuit failure, or a faulty shift lock actuator, and advises checking the brake lights and fuse BJB 50.
