white smoke from the exhaust?

. recently whenever i start the car i get a huge puff of white smoke coming from the tail pipe. I know its not your typical condensation. It usually clears up after a minute or two. Also my engine light just came on. Any ideas.

You should goto a parts store and have them pull the codes for you so you know what they are if you don't own a code reader. As for the smoke. White smoke is oil burning. This can be caused by worn out cylinders or bad valve seal or worn out valve guides. If you do a compression test that will tell you if the cylinders are worn out. If they are not then it is likely a valve issue.

If you don't have a compression tester they are cheap from Harbor Freight.
