Is there a weak bearing known in the differential in the 2003 model of the Explorer? My mechanic says to fix my problem it would be $2800 to fix. Would my entire differential be out with normal road driving and little to no towing? It is making a growling noise and I am not sure what it is.

Hi there,

The problem is that if a bearing has failed there will be a lot of metal in the oil which can do further damage, if the crown wheel & pinion are ok the repair will not be that much, i would get an opinion from a transmission & diff specialist first.
