lend my car to my brother-in-law and he said that when he put the car in gear the shifter fell off into his hand, is this possible????? It's at a dealership and they said that they will have to replace the steering column and it will cost 1800.00 bucks. Is it hard to replace a steering column?

Ok The same happen to us this week, all models of explorer 2002 and up are having this problem, We bought the Column (Used from 2004) will try to get the gearshift part and change it to our ex, not so sure jet. Its the way it was constructed not with aluminum but with cast iron and its amazing the quantity of explorer with the same problem.
Don't know jet how hard it could be, we are doing the shift with our fingers after removing the top attachment.
