Hi,
I have a Ford Explorer 2003 Limited, and it has a reverse sensor alert sound when backing-up. When I start it in the morning, and shift from P to D, of course I will pass the R(rear) before shifting it into drive. As I pass the R, it will make the sound as if I'm backing-up(beep). But thats it. It won't work everytime I put it in reverse the beeping sound does not work, and it shows on the button(lights-up) for it that it is off. I cleaned the back bumper where the sensors are, but no luck. Is it something I can fix myself or do I have to bring it to ford. what could be the problem?
thanks,
Attilio

From your description, it will beep as you move the shifter across "R" in the way to "D". But it will not beep when the shifter is at "R". This leads me to believe that it is more than just cleaning the sensor.

It has to do with the electrical circuitry for the reverse sensor, the transmission range sensor, as well as mechanical aspect of the transmission selector. When you move the gear shifter, it sends a signal to the transmission control module to move the transmission solenoid to the appropriate gear. It also send a signal to transmission range sensor (speed sensors) and a signal to the backup sensor.

If you can follow electrical diagram and have done some transmission mechanical works, you may be able to trace the problem. If not, it is best that you let Ford technician to look at it.
