When backing out of a parking space, I heard a small pop and my wheels shifted, the steering has been loose and will pull to the right side, now I hear a grinding coming from the front axle area. Does anyone know what this is? Is it an axle bearing?

If it popped then started grinding, it sounds like a wheel bearing. Does the sound change when you make turns?

Let me know.

Joe,
sometimes driving straight it will stop making noise, sometimes turning will get it to stop. I just tried to back it out of my drive and the wheel is locked it wont go. Is that what it is? What do I need to ask for at the auto parts store? Is it a wheel bearing? Do I need the hub assembly? How do I know which one to replace?

Hi:
On a 4wd, the "wheel bearing" is the hub bearing, so don't worry about getting confused with that. However, are you sure it has nothing to do with the brakes? What I would like you to try is this. If you can, securly lift the tire off the ground that is locking up. Remove the brake caliper and see it the axle will turn. If it still doesn't, my guess is the bearing. If it does turn easily, re-examin the brake caliper to make sure it isn't sticking or the pads are good (both inner and outer).

It is not the break pads or the caliper, do I need to buy front hub assembly or can I get away with just buying the bearing?
