2003 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My mechanic says the control arms on the 2 front wheels need to be replaced. He showed me that with a "crowbar" he could wiggle the metal piece containing the control arm about 1/4 inch. I am not
very knowledgeable about this so does his recommendation make sense?
